In this energy chain wiki, we offer you comprehensive information and practical tips on all aspects of the energy chains: from materials and practical solutions to instructions on selection, installation and maintenance.
What you will find on this page:

Representation using the example of an E4Q chain link. Some energy chains deviate from this representation.
An energy chain consists of multiple interconnected chain links. The energy chain is closed off with mounting brackets on both sides. A chain link has the following elements:
Energy chains from igus are made from the high-performance polymer igumid, which must withstand compressive force and tensile strain, abrasion resistance, good resilience and strong behaviour at high and low temperatures. igumid G is the basic material for most applications. It can withstand continuous temperatures from -40°C to well over +120°C.
Simply filter by type of movement in the energy chain online shop and narrow down the results based on the dimensions.
With the energy chain configurator "e-chain expert", you can define your individual ready-to-connect energy chain system in just a few steps.
Simply use our service life calculator to calculate the expected service life of the energy chain.
By using our i.Sense sensors, you can obtain a well-founded status report on your energy supply whenever you want in real time.
With rol e-chains®, travels of 1,200m and more are possible.
As a rule, the standard temperature range for plastic energy chains is -40°C to +130°C, short term +170°C.
Our award-winning cable chains have been specially developed for offices and furniture. For example, igus offers the ZF14 or OCR cable chain for organised cable guidance at the desk. Fastening options: magnetic, screwed and glued.
A detailed list of chemically resistant energy chains provides information on the resistance of igus materials igumid G, TE, and NB to many chemical substances.
Depending on the application, pivoting or locking mounting brackets are recommended. Pivoting mounting brackets are movable at the connection to the first chain link, i.e. a radius can also be moved here. A locking mounting bracket is fixed in the connection to the first chain link, i.e. this connection does not allow any movement.
Yes, plastic energy chains with the material igumid HT are resistant to hot swarf up to +850°C.
Yes, with the autoglide system you can realise travels of up to 80m without a guide trough.
Yes, all igus energy chain materials can be used for continuous use down to -40°C.
Yes, you can find all energy chains made of conductive ESD material here.
Yes, we recommend the TH3 energy chain, which has been specially developed for the food and beverage industry.
Yes, with igus plastic energy chains it is possible to save up to 57% and with chainflex cables up to 17%. Tech up now and improve energy efficiency.
With our i.Cee system for predictive maintenance, you are shown the optimum maintenance time in real time at all times, depending on the actual movement profile and the current status of your energy supply.
Yes, energy chains can also be used reliably in indoor cranes with two trolleys. The energy supply systems must be designed in such a way that they safely coordinate the movements of both trolleys and protect cables from wear, tensile strain and external influences. Especially with long travels and high dynamic loads, energy chains offer advantages over classic festooning or cable trolley systems: they require less installation space, are low-maintenance, protect energy and data cables better and enable high travel speeds. Robust energy chains with rollers and guide troughs are often used for demanding crane applications.
Yes. The basic colour for our energy chains is always black. Energy chains in any colour shown in the colour selection chart are subject to a percentage colour surcharge. Any other colours not included on the page are individually calculated depending on part and quantity, insofar as this is technically possible.
Discover colours nowTwo cables on top of each other are fine, but with more cables on top of each other without separation, experience has shown that there is tension and the cables get in each other's way, so to speak, and in the worst case are pushed out between the crossbars of the energy chain. In the worst case, this can lead to shearing or cable breakage.

With plastic energy chains, it is possible to implement the travel with a permitted sag. This option is not permitted for steel chains. The value of the smallest possible bend radius of the respective chain series also determines the maximum permitted sag.
As soon as the permitted sag is exceeded, the wear of the energy chain increases and the service life decreases enormously.
In these cases, the following options are available:

If no marking is visible on the chain link, or if it is no longer legible, the bend radius can also be measured/calculated: measure the height of the radius arc, dimension H (from the base to the upper outer edge of the upper run of the chain), see diagram. Since the radius is measured in the neutral phase of the chain link, the outer height ha of the chain link must be subtracted from the dimension H.
Divide this result by 2 to obtain the nominal bend radius R of the energy chain. Summarised as a formula:
R = (H – ha)/2
Yes, because you can simply fold the special crossbars open. Should they ever wear out, they can be easily replaced.
The interior separation is an important component of energy chains and serves to separate or subdivide different media within the guide. Parts for the interior separation of energy chains are:
